Contemporary Jewish Writing in Hungary

Susan Rubin Suleiman
4.9/5 (20778 ratings)
Description:This collection of post-World War II prose and poetry directly or indirectly reflecting the Holocaust is preceded by an introduction, "Between Assimilation and Catastrophe: A Century of Jewish Writing in Hungary" (p. xi-lxxii). Suleiman mainly covers the period of 1867-1944; Forgács mainly deals with 1945 to the post-communist period. While the pre-World War I period is characterized as a golden age, assimilation is shown as having some limitations in regard to Hungarian acceptance of the Jews. Discussion of both history and literature of the interwar period, however, reveals increasingly dark and tragic resonances, both in terms of politics and intellectual life. Jewish self-hatred is illuminated in this context. Hungary's defeat in World War II and the subsequent brief communist republic led to antisemitism in various areas. The Holocaust saw considerable Hungarian collaboration. Since the postwar communist regime banned discussion about Jewish victims of the war, there was a delay until Jewish writers began to ask questions about recent Hungarian-Jewish relations and Jewish identity. The latter often involved disorientation and alienation from the society which had participated in the ghettoization, deportation, and murder of Hungarian Jewry. Antisemitism has emerged in post-communist discourse and politics, partly echoing interwar tensions between nationalistic populists and largely Jewish urbanists. Concise introductions provide information about each writer. Pp. 171-177 contain remarks on Hungarian Holocaust literature by Imre Kertész.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
