This scholarly edition establishes the cannon of the Constable's poetry and produced a reliable text. Problems of the authorship, text and date are discussed in the Introduction, which also gives a fuller account of the poet's life, especially of his activities for both Protestantism and, later, Catholicism, than has hitherto been available. As a writer of religious verse, Constable has been unduly neglected and while the volume is concerned to reassess his work in accordance with modern critical standards, it also demonstrates his historical importance as one of the earliest Elizabethan sonneteers whose reputation and influence stood high amongst his contemporaries.
