Political Messages and Partisan Bias

Jeanette Lois Morehouse
4.9/5 (13722 ratings)
Description:For decades research on public opinion and information processing was dominated by a minimalist tradition that questioned the impact of political information. Moreover, the public was seen as incompetent in regards to using information to make political decisions. Recent research has hammered away at this early tradition and the role of information is now back in the forefront. As political information has grown in availability and accessibility, it is not surprising to revisit the role of information in political decision making and explore if information is important in the context of political decision making. Political communication studies are based on the idea of information being important. By political communication, I refer to Graber's definition: “the construction, sending, receiving, and processing of messages that are likely to have a significant impact on politics” (1993, 305). This dissertation focuses on the role of political communication and the impact is has on citizens. I focus on two theoretical areas, agenda setting and the hostile media effect, to examine the extent to which citizens are able to recognize the content of political information in an accurate manner. I also consider the content of political messages to see if the recipient's partisan orientation creates a bias that impedes accurate communication, thereby neutralizing message impact. Finally, I explore the factors that enhance and diminish the impact of both of objective content and partisan bias on the receipt and evaluation of political messages. This dissertation is based on empirical analyses that employ both survey data and laboratory experiments. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
