Biological Control and Conservation Practice

Roy Van Driesche
4.9/5 (19463 ratings)
Description:The goal of this book is to discuss the integration of classical biological control, when used for control of invasive exotic species, into the framework of conservation biology and community restoration. This integration will require that scientists with different specializations come together at the inception of programs to (1) define ecological goals for biological control projects, (2) work interactively to forecast risks, and (3) carry out projects jointly. Our book will explore issues that must be understood by both groups of scientists to make such integration possible.(1) Goal setting for biological control projects in natural areas is a critical step requiring integration because, working alone, biological control scientists are likely to focus on invader reduction rather than system restoration, which may not be adequate. Assistance from conservation biologists during project planning can increase focus on the ecological purpose of projects. At the outset project leaders and conservation biologists must unequivocally establish that targeted invaders are highly damaging to the natural system and causing any observed undesired changes. Some invaders may only be correlated with ecological change and not its cause. The desired outcomes for biological control projects must be defined in terms of system recovery, with specific recovery goals, not just in terms of pest suppression. Goals need to be identified through collaborative discussion between biological control scientists and conservation biologists familiar with the invaded ecosystem.(2) Risk evaluations should be developed by conservation biologists and biological control scientists working together. This will increase the quality and transparency of risk assessment. Publically accessible websites where work plans for forecasting trophic impacts (host ranges) of new agents and potential indirect or ecosystem effects can be used as the platform for such interaction, allowing for increased taxonomic input and greater breadth of ecosystem thinking at the risk evaluation phase. In this book we discuss some approaches for achieving this collaboration.(3) Finally, integration of conservation biologist into biological control projects as co-practitioners to help guide project implementation is a concept that will be explored in this book. Such co-management of projects will have the practical effect of adding conservation biology perspective at every working stage, influencing all manner of decisions, including whether or not to release particular agents and choice of data to collect to document outcomes. Integration of biological control into conservation biology practice will be a mutually beneficial process whose implementation will develop over an extended period. In fact we consider this an essential step in support of work to mitigate the impacts of highly damaging introduced species. Regretably, we are far from this goal at the present time due to the different goals and approaches of scientists in these different fields. However, we foresee that as this integration proceeds, perspective on what is valuable from this interaction will deepen and new dimensions, perhaps not currently recognized, will emerge. This book is a step in that process and explores and predicts that path ahead. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
