Excerpt: Alexei Nikolayevich Kosygin (Russian:, Aleksej Nikolajevi Kosygin; February 20, 1904 December 18, 1980) was a Soviet-Russian statesman during the Stalin, Khrushchev and Brezhnev years. Kosygin became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1933. He was quickly promoted to high party and government offices due to Stalin's Great Purge in the 1930s. During Stalin's rule, Kosygin held several high governmental posts, including that of Minister of Finance. After Stalin's death, he was promoted to deputy premier by Nikita Khrushchev in 1960 and under Brezhnev he was promoted to Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. Kosygin made several key trips to the United States and other countries, acquiring an important stature on the international diplomatic scene. In 1964, Khrushchev had to step down in a coup that brought Brezhnev to power. Kosygin's influence under Brezhnev increased after being promoted as Chairman of the Council of Ministers, a post he retained until 1980. His position under Brezhnev made him the second most powerful figure in the Soviet Union at the time, with Henry A. Kissinger believing him to be the leader of the Soviet Union in the 1960s. Kosygin was born into a working class family settled in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg).
