Excerpt: The Northwest Indian War (1785-1795), also known as Little Turtle's War and by various other names, was a war fought between the United States and a confederation of numerous American Indian tribes for control of the Northwest Territory. It followed centuries of conflict over this territory, first among Indian nations, and then with the added shifting alliances among the tribes and European powers, such as France and Great Britain, and their colonists. The Treaty of Paris (1783) terminated the American Revolutionary War and gave the U.S. control of the Northwest Territories. Despite the treaty the British kept forts and policies there that supported the Indians living in the Northwest Territories. President George Washington directed the U.S. Army to halt the hostilities between the Indians and settlers and enforce U.S. sovereignty over the territory.
