He was so industrious and frugal that he had succeeded by the time he was twenty- six yeara old in getting together property sufficient to be called a comfortable start in life. He was gentle and respectful to his widowed mother, and was quite ready to do kindnesses to those who deserved them. His mother had been bereft of her husband about four years before.
