He wrote the lyrics of the well-known ballad Danny Boy which is set to the tune A Londonderry Air. Weatherly wrote over 3,000 popular songs, including Roses are Blooming in Picardy and The Holy City. Frederick Weatherly (usually known as Fred) was born in Somerset and after schooling at Hereford Cathedral School graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Classics in 1871. After Oxford, Weatherly practised law and achieved the distinction of being appointed a King's Counsel. Multi-talented, he also wrote adult sci-fi and fantasy novels and more than fifty children's books. Beatrix Potter's first signed illustrations were published in A Happy Pair (c1893), a book of verse written by Weatherly. Amongst his other works are: Muriel: The Sea-King's Daughter and Other Poems (1870), Wilton School; or, Harry Campbell's Revenge (1872), The Rudiments of Logic, Inductive and Deductive (1879), Oxford Days (1879), Dresden China and Other Songs (1880), Questions in Logic, Progressive and General (1883), Comical Customers (c1894) and Old Santa Claus!
