Unknown Author
4.9/5 (14155 ratings)
Description:Phillis Wheatley, America's first black poet, was kidnapped from her African home at the age of seven by slave traders. Bought by the prosperous Wheatley family of Boston in 1761, she quickly mastered the English language, as well as Latin, and soon began to write verse. By her teenage years, she was a well-known author, reciting her poems for the New England elite - in homes where blacks could not even sit at a table with whites. Her only book, 'Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral', was published in 1773, bringing her wide acclaim. But after the American Revolution began in 1775, Americans were absorbed with war, not literature. Granted freedom just before the Revolution, Wheatley spent the rest of her life struggling for recognition - and mere survival - in an indifferent world. In 1784, penniless and alone, she died at the age of 31. Today she has reclaimed her place as an important colonial poet - and as the mother of black literature in the United States. _________________________________*****______________________________'American Women of Achievement' introduces 50 women whose actions, ideas, and artistry have helped shape the course of American history. These are stories of creativity, courage, and leadership - in the arts and sciences, in government and religion, in private life, and in the public arena. Richly illustrated, 'American Women of Achievement' is written in a lively, colorful style especially for young adults. Matina S. Horner, president of Radcliffe College and an leading scholar of women's lives, puts the series in perspective with an introductory essay on the historic achievements of American women. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
