Description:Excerpt from Travels in Russia: And a Residence at St. Petersburg and Odessa, in the Years 1827-1829; Intended to Give Some Account of Russia as It Is and Not as It Is Represented to Be, &C, &C The author of the following sheets, during his late residence in Russia, was in the habit of keeping a daily journal, at first with no other object in view than his own instruction, and the amusement of his immediate friends in England, who received a volume, from time to time when he had the opportunity of forwarding it by a conveyance not liable to official visitation. On ceasing to be regarded as a stranger in Russia, his source of information multiplied; and his recorded facts accumulating in the same proportion, led him to entertain the idea of attempting, at some future period, a History of Odessa - a work which seemed to be required, as none had previously appeared in this country professing to give a full and accurate description of that town. Scarcely, however, had he commenced the collection of materials expressly for this purpose, when circumstances occurred which induced him, from a sense of professional duty as an English physician, to resign the appointment he held under a written protest, and to demand a passport for England.
