They scheme to find a more permanent place of refuge (Resi suggests becoming night porters); steal lumps of sugar in cafes against tomorrow's hunger, and greedily devour the small pleasures of the present: a bottle of beer, a sausage, the view of a delicatessen window. Natasha is an old expert at parrying misfortune, and for her the only true refuge lies in her memories of the past: a time of glittering wealth, cruelly gay romance and aristocratic elegance.For Boris, the world is made up of Aunt Natasha and his devotion to her.
