Description:This book explores how the myth of Narcissus, which is at once about self-love and self-destruction, desire and death, beauty and pain, became an ambivalent symbol of humanistic endeavour, and articulated the conflicts of early modern authorship.European culture in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries oscillated between Golden Age optimism and fearful apocalypticism, narcissistic self-confidence and an almost nihilistic self-doubt. Humanistic reforms in the universities in England, an expanding system of schooling, and subsequent growth of university education meant that opportunities for self-advancement were many. It was a time of increased self-determination and new possibilities, particularly in the growing city of London. Yet there were also constant threats to life, property and health, from wars, plague outbreaks, courtly politics or the everyday violence of city living. Moreover, there was a religious imperative not to show too much pride in one's achievements; philautia (self-love) could and should be a positive thing but love of oneself must always be second to love of God.
