One witness at Lefroy's trial claimed to have seen the attack itself from her cottage, despite being a hundred yards away, idly looking through a window as the train hurtled past. Another was adamant that Lefroy had been wearing a particular style of hat on the day of the murder, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary; it transpired that the headwear stated matched that worn by Lefroy in a sketch produced for a wanted poster, when Lefroy's name had, finally, been on everybody's lips. The limelight had taken some time to come to rest on Lefroy, but the often unflattering revelations of the six months between murder and trial only hinted at the trajectory of Lefroy's twenty-one years; it would be fair to say that he had led a dramatic life. By contrast, the victim in this story, sixty-four year old Mr Frederick Isaac Gold, was a successful businesman and a pillar of the community in the leafy Sussex suburbs. The lives of Frederick Isaac Gold and Percy Lefroy Mapleton could hardly be more dissimilar; yet it was almost fated that they should meet.
