Description:Probably the only biography available of the man responsible for founding the Congregational churches in Victor Harbor, Encounter Bay, Yilki, Port Elliott and surrounds. Newland served as a pastor in Britain for 22 years before being convinced to emigrate to South Australia. He arrived via the colonial missionary Society in 1839 with his wife and children. He was an agriculturalist as well as preacher. Newland believed that a place of worship was as important as a personal home, and by 1846 "The Tabernacle", a small place of worship was erected, near to where the Tabernacle cemetery is in Yilki (since demolished). The first church fellowship was formed in 1850 on orthodox evangelical lines: "As a group of Christian people we wished to be entirely governed by the Word of God both as to doctrine and discipline, and therefore, while we decidedly hold the Doctrine of the Trinity, including as it does, the proper Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit, the total depravity of man, the Infinite Atonement of and the merits of Jesus Christ, and the absolute necessity of regeneration by the Holy Spirit, we leave other matters open for individual enquiry as admitting diversity of sentiment." In 1862 a Jubilee celebration of Newland's ministry took place, aboriginals also taking part, one congregant writing: "Thine aged servant here, Thy Gospels pioneer To this far place, His helper hast Thou been, Through many a changing scene, Full threescore years and ten,Preserved by grace." On the 8th March, 1864, a 74 year old Newland was traveling home via horse and cart from a preaching engagement. As they came down steep Baldocks Hill (on Crows Nest road) the shaft of the cart snapped and Newland was thrown under the horses hooves. He was found later in great pain, sitting under a nearby tree. He suffered a lacerated jaw, neck lacerations and a broken spine. Newland was taken home but lived only a few more hours. Among his last words were "Yes, I am very happy." His funeral was marked by sixty horse drawn carriages, two hundred men and women on horseback, and five hundred mourners. The cortege was estimated as being half a mile in length. The service was conducted in the open air, the tabernacle being too small to accommodate the crowds. His son, Simpson Newland tells us his father was "A Puritan with all the convictions and indomitable resolutions that ever marked the old Puritan sect of Independents." He was known to traverse rough bush tracks and crossing flooded rivers, in the proclamation of the Gospel. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
