It's so impressive to me that more than 2200 participants from 49 diverse nations could come together and communicate excitedly about the latest ideas in mathematics and its ever-growing applications. The program had approximately 1500 speakers and offered everyone plenty worth hearing all week long. Certainly, everything couldn't be included in this volume. What was selected, however, gives a rare panorama of our field today. There is no better place for government, industry, and university leadership to learn the immense value and potential of our discipline. Imagine what's in store for us at ICIAM 95!The introductory material lists some of those individuals and organizations that contributed in many crucial ways to the success of ICIAM 91. It fails to explicitly thank many SIAM staff members who worked harder than ever for months before and after the conference. I'm proud that many observed that SIAM was such a gracious host society. Attendees got used to seeing a busy photographer at all the sessions and social events. He's SIAM's managing director, Dr. I. E. Block, who not only took all the candid photos in this volume, but superbly orchestrated millions of details to make ICIAM 91 the success we all enjoyed.From Ball to Yserentant, the volume highlights 17 invited talks by world-class applied mathematicians. It also lists the broad array of minisymposia, organized according to subject area. The bibliographies listed after each subject grouping will give readers pointers on where to catch up on what's new in the business. The listing of conference attendees and authors finishes the volume. We hope they are accurate and apologize for any misspelled or missing names.
