Description:After a period of self-imposed isolation during the latter part of the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century, in 1854 Japan was forced by the United States to open its borders to international trade. The sudden influx of Japanese commodities into Europe and America triggered a veritable revolution in the arts and design. This, the classical period of 'Japonisme' associated with Fauvism in France and the Aesthetic movement in Britain, saw progressive artists across Europe adopt elements of the visual language of Japanese woodblock prints, ceramics, lacquer and textiles to forge a new European art and lay the foundations of modernism. The exhibition explores a number of key themes that follow a chronological development, from the 1860s when the first Japanese works began arriving in Europe through to the rise of the Art Nouveau movement at the turn of the century when Western art had fully absorbed Japanese artistic principles and we see the beginnings of modernism emerge. The exhibition closes with an epilogue of Australian woodblock prints of the 1920s and 1930s. The show will draw upon works from across the NGVs collection, including paintings, prints and drawings, decorative arts and Japanese art.
