Licenciado en historia por la Escuela Normal Superior y por la Sorbona de Paris, llego a Mexico en 1965 para hacer una investigacion sobre la Cristiada. Ha sido profesor investigador en el Colegio de Mexico, la Sorbona, la Universidad de Perpinan y el Colegio de Michoacan. Desde 1993 trabaja en el Centro de Investigacion y Docencia Economicas (CIDE), institucion donde fundo la division de historia y la revista internacional Istor.
