Description:This book takes a fresh look at what is conventionally termed "European Expansion." In 1400 hardly any Europeans could be found outside of Europe and the Mediterranean/Black Sea region. But by 1700 thousands were established in communities all around the world. Some lived in European-controlled empires and many others were settled in European trading colonies. Most of them lived in households managed by indigenous wives, with inter-cultural children. A surprising share of those Europeans lived outside of European communities, many had converted to local religions, and thousands served as mercenaries in various Asian armies and navies. David Ringrose looks beyond the traditional history of European expansion, which highlights European conquests, empire building, and hegemony in order to explore a more human dimension of Europeans abroad. He argues instead that Early Modern Europe was relatively poor and that its industrial and military technology, while distinctive in some ways, was not obviously superior to that of Africa or Asia. As a result, the interaction between Europeans abroad and the peoples they met was qualitatively different from the relationship created by the economic and military Imperialism of the post-1750 Industrial Revolution. The author views it as a process of cultural interaction, collaboration, and assimilation, masked by narratives of European conquest or assertion of control. In this view, Europeans who went abroad before 1700 were engaged in an experience not dramatically different from other cases of cross-cultural contact. Ringrose frames the process in its own time rather than as the precursor of what came later. Then, as now, historical actors knew nothing of the unexpected consequences of their actions. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
