Description:One of the last forms adopted by Gurdjieff from 1925 to 1949 to deliver his spiritual teaching to his students was the ritual meals he organized at home with toasts to the health of what he called the "Idiots". Gurdjieff understood the term Idiot in its original Greek sense of being egocentric, which limits its attention to that which is peculiar to it, to that which is private, and which consequently disinterested in what is public, that is to say common to all. Gurdjieff had discerned in human self-centeredness various aspects which were obstacles to the path of spiritual liberation, and for this reason he elaborated on the basis of these obstacles a spiritual scale finally composed of 21 degrees, called the "scale of Idiots". ".On this scale, which was part of the thousand-year-old tradition of spiritual scales, the different degrees of Idiots referred to so many particular obstacles to be overcome on the road to liberation. Of these 21 degrees from Ordinary Idiot to God (Idiot # 21), the first 16 types of Idiots represented the various aspects of egocentrism that characterized students, while grades 12 to 16 represented the various aspects of egocentrism affecting spiritual masters. The Idiots represent the degrees of a ladder and their sequence gives reason for the successive stages of spiritual evolution.
