History of Standard Oil Company (New Jersey): Pioneering in Big Business 1882-1911

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (25982 ratings)
Description:This is a study of the policies and practices followed by executives of Standard Oil combination during the years of its ascendancy. Out of the chaos of depression and unrestrained competition in the petroleum industry during the 1870s, a group of dynamic men first formed an alliance of investors and companies, then systematized administration under a central organization—the Standard Oil Trust and later under Jersey Standard as a holding company.Executives of this combination worked out a method of team operations basic to the development and growth of the American petroleum industry and business administration in general. Management by consultation and agreement through the use of specialized committees, a prominent characteristic of Jersey Standard's mode of procedure today, had its roots in the 1870's and was formalized in the early 1880's.Decisions by Standard Oil men, whether in top echelons or on lower rungs of the administrative ladder, have been treated as reactions to such factors as prevailing customs, individual habits and motives, public opinion, competition from other petroleum interests and substitutes for petroleum products, and political pressures at home and abroad. The book covers the entire range of Standard Oil operations. Functions evaluated include finding, producing, transporting, storing, processing and marketing petroleum and its derivatives. Also discussed are related manufacturing activities, financial policies, and public and employee relations. Marketing of Standard Oil products involved the whole world. Analysis of methods and adjustments in this function constitute one of the major contributions of this study. As competition increased and areas for the production of petroleum expanded geographically, both inside and outside the United States, the relative strength of the Standard Oil combination declined. Then in 1911 the U.S. Government obliged the combination to divide into more than thirty separate companies.Throughout the book, mistakes in judgment as well as sound decisions are discussed in terms of the era and the behavioral characteristics of John D. Rockefeller and his team of associates. Their success stemmed from a series of innovations, including the establishment of systematic administration of all Standard Oil functions, the technological conquest of sulfur in Lima-Indiana crude oil, and the ability to provide fuel for the internal-combustion engines of the new automotive industry at the turn of the century. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
