Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Beyond Hybridization: The Spatial Histories of Mong Kok, Hong Kong" Submitted by Tang Siu-hang, Wesley for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in May 2005 The history of Hong Kong always begins with the cliche that Hong Kong was once just a small fishing village before becoming surprisingly one of the world's most famous cities. Whether we now identify Hong Kong as a popular tourist destination or an economic powerhouse, such an understanding of the city cannot help us analyze and develop the inter-relationships between urban culture, space and history. Addressing the cultural problematics of Hong Kong, Ackbar Abbas interprets the space of Hong Kong as a space of disappearance. Following his assertions of the importance of space in the studies of Hong Kong culture, this thesis theorizes history as 'spatial histories' and concentrates on the examination of the 'trialectical' inter-translatability between the culture, space and history of Mong Kok, one of the most bustling districts in Hong Kong. While some may doubt the representativeness of Mong Kok for Hong Kong culture, this thesis argues that the spatial histories of Mong Kok shows that Hong Kong has a critical capacity to deal with the concealed cultures constituted by spatial dislocations and temporal distortions. Besides, the study is also an analytical tool which allows us to re-think the danger of the notion of 'hybridization' which tends to simplify the complex spatial politics of Hong Kong. The thesis concludes with some reflections on how a cultural policy for Hong Kong can be developed in the light of the spatial histories of Mong Kok proposed.
