How deep that sorrow was to her (as a Catholic) I learned in after years, whilst her soul was hovering on the borders of eternity; and then she only divulged it to me under obedience to her confessor, who hoped it would be an inducement to me to enter a religious life; and the shadow that rested on my mother's life has entered and cast its reﬂection on mine.
