Il caso volle che uno di questi agenti scegliesse proprio Steve Borden, il quale comincio ad allenarsi per diventare un wrestler e ben presto arrivo a competere nel circuito National Wrestling Alliance col nome di "Flash Borden" in coppia con Jim Hellwig che in seguito passera alla storia come The Ultimate Warrior. La popolarita di Sting aumento a tal punto che i dirigenti decisero di sciogliere la coppia e di lanciarlo come wrestler singolo. Sting in poco tempo divenne uno dei beniamini del pubblico; nel 1989 fu insignito dalla rivista Pro Wrestling Illustrated del riconoscimento di Most Improved Wrestler of the Year.
