Burmese Law Tales. The Legal Element in Burmese Folklore

Maung Htin Aung
4.9/5 (17918 ratings)
Description:A tale containins a riddle or a problem to be solved is a common type of folktale in all countries. Such tales existed in Burma but most of them became 'law tales', that is folktales illustrating a point of law. This book is a collection of such tales. They were gathered by the author from the villages in the remote territory between the mountains of Arakan and the Irawaddy river. They have the same gay and carefree atmosphere to be found in all Burmese folktales, and give some insight not only into Burmese mythology and folklore but also into Burmese law itself. In this introduction the author describes the nature ot the law tale as such, and gives an account of the development of Burmese law and the rise of a Burmese law as native in its origin and very little influenced by Hindu law. There is a detailed analysis and identification of the tales and bibliography.Dr. Aung was a lecturer at Rangoon University in 1933, was raised to professorial rank in 1936, and in 1946 he was appointed Rector. Retiring from the service of the University in 1959, he was elected to the honorary post of Vice-Chancellor. He is at present Burmese Ambassador to Ceylon. He is the author of Burmese Folk-Tales published by the Oxford University Press in 1948 and subsecuently reprinted.
