With a Hitherto Unpublished Essay on Stenbock by Arthur Symons and a Bibliography by Timothy d'Arch Smith.
In the London of the late eighties a young poet, W.B. Yeats was invited to a very odd supper by a Baltic Count, whom half a century later he was to describe as, "Scholar, connoisseur, drunkard, poet, pervert, most charming of men." A devout catholic, Count Eric Stanislaus Stenbock died a horrible death not many years later. As a writer, he was only occasionally successful, but many friends - some brilliant, some not - remembered him with affection and testified to his happy influence on their lives. This is a biographical exploration which takes the reader through an unexpected variety of settings: from a ghostly manor in Estonia, full of Tsarist officers and ebullient children, to the bustling London of the nineties; from such company as Oscar Wilde, Simeon Solomon, Aubrey Beardsley, Lionel Johnson, The Pearsall Smiths, and the Berensons, to a solitary exile in cheerless Belgian hotels. The Count, who with his gang of children, released all the toy balloons of Dorpat into the winter sky, who took Ernst Rhys on hair-raising drives 'round London, ended as a pitiable figure, isolated by his sexual abnormality, condemned to death by his compulsive drinking. It is a story full of agreeable surprises and interest; it is also a valuable minor contribution to the literary history of the period. Included as an appendix is a hitherto unpublished essay on Stenbock by Arthur Symons, and the book contains a comprehensive index and bibliographical checklist of Stenbock's writings, compiled by Timothy d'Arch Smith.Includes five pages of illustrations, Bibliography & Index at rear. Limited edition of 750 copies. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
