But he made light of their solicitation, saying that while such a man as Thomas Jefferson and others, wiser and better than himself, had no record of their lives, it was not worth while towr ite his. Finding that he was persistent in his refusal, my wish to preserve the memory of his life became so strong, that I determined to attempt it. During a long convalescence, that followed a dangerous illness, I spent much time at my father's, which favored my design, as I commenced taking notes of conversations, in which I led him to relate the incidents of his early life; his uncommonly retentive memory enabling him to recall the various scenes, and depict them with vivacity and pleasure.
