It is said that the bulk of the foreign troops put at his command were lost by shipwreck. However it might be, the end of the vast announcements of preparation was, that he reached Orkney with some seven hundred men, chie y from Holstein and Hamburg, and fifteen hundred stand of arms given him by the Queen of Sweden. He was not likely to find among the Orcadians much indignation about the fate of a King in London, or even to find many who had ever heard of it.
