I have not thought it advisable to introduce into a text-book discussions of topics that belong properly to Psychology, Logic, and AEsthetics, or to controvert, or even mention, opposing views. The principles and rules are stated briefly, and exemplified: the instructor can expand, modify, and apply them according to the requirements of his classes. I am very largely indebted to the Lectures on the English Language by Hon. Geo. P. Marsh, to Dr. J. K. F. Rinne's voluminous Theory of Style, to Dr. Karl Becker's philosophical treatise upon German Style, and to Vinet's Homiletics. I have also freely used the results of the labors of many other writers. That a distinct acknowledgment of my indebtedness so seldom appears in the body of the work does not proceed from any wish to claim as my own what is another's.
