Given the opportunity, a chicken will, in fact MUST read anything that is placed before it. (If you don’t believe me, just set THIS book in front of one of YOUR chickens and watch what happens.) So... when presented with the opportunity to read the words written on the small scrap of paper just outside the chicken coop’s gate, Roo could hardly resist. He carefully eased through the gap between the gate and the fence so as not to open it too wide, and cautiously approached the small scrap of paper to have a look. “Tuesday, April 14th” the paper said. “Admit One” it said. “Westlake Zoo, just up the road from Jeremy’s house” it said. Roo was thrilled to read the words on the small scrap of paper. He was very pleased that they were written on something small enough for him to carry. Something that he could easily pick up. Something that he could tuck gently under his wing and keep with him. “Westlake Zoo, just up the road from Jeremy’s house.” The words formed complex thoughts in Roo’s head. “Tuesday, April 14th,” that’s today! “Admit One.” Roo began to realize that this was a ticket, the bearer of which could gain entrance to the Westlake Zoo, just up the road from Jeremy’s house.
