Alphonse Bertillon: Father of Scientific Detection

Henry T.F. Rhodes
4.9/5 (15336 ratings)
Description:Not only is this the first biography of Alphonse Bertillon (1853-1914) to appear in the English language, but it is also an interesting contribution to the literature on crime detection. Bertillon's name will always be associated with the identification system he established for the French police. But he invented neither the principles nor the practice of anthropometry. His great achievement was to devise the means whereby measurements of the head and body could be standardized and given the maximum of precision. His work had far-reaching effects, and did much to raise the standard of the inefficient and corrupt police methods of the nineteenth century. Modern methods of criminal investigation are taken so much for granted that pioneers in this field, among whom Alphonse Bertillon takes a prominent place, are apt to be overlooked. Fingerprinting is common today, but eighty years ago the police forces of civilized countries had no such effective system of classification or reference where criminals were concerned. Large numbers of photographs of convicted criminals were amassed at police headquarters, aliases causing many duplications, and the very size of these collections defeated their purpose. It was this state of affairs that Alphonse Bertillon, a clerk in the French Prefecture of Police, was determined to remedy. Mr. Rhodes describes his subject's life and work with great sympathy allied to expert knowledge. He was a student at the Institute of Forensic Science at the University of Lyon under its Director, Dr. Edmond Locard, who was Bertillon's pupil and friend, and who was also well acquainted with Bertillon's friends and colleagues. many original documents in the possession of the Bertillon family and the French police were made available to him, some of which throw a new light on the Dreyfus case, in which Bertillon was an important witness. Mr. Rhodes is the author of ten books on criminological subjects including "Forensic Chemistry" and "Science and the Police Officer".We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
