Description:PREFACE: The readers I have in mind for this first study of Jessamyn West, who is one of the great living American fictionists, are those who want an accurate synoptic and objective analytical study of such works at The Friendly Persuasion, Except for Me and Thee, South of the Angels, Cress Delahanty, and others. But, at the same time, I make no pretense of stating the "last word" about this author concerning whom no extended biographical or critical treatment has hitherto existed. The book begins with a biographical chapter taking the career of Miss West up to late 1970. In what sense Jessamyn West is an "unconventional Quaker" author will be discussed only incidentally, or via indirection; for the major concern of this chapter is the relation of her life and times to her art....The next three chapters consist of practical criticism, all mine unless otherwise indicated, plus summaries of the best of what little criticism has been written about her literature, whether by reviewers, explicators, or Miss West herself. In Chapters 2 and 3, I treat her work as related to two distinct geographical regions, the Midwest and the California seaboard. With the exceptions of the late books Leafy Rivers and Except for Me and Thee, this division also follows, in general, the publication sequence. The division shows Miss West s working forward in time scheme: The Friendly Persuasion begins around the middle of the nineteenth century; South of the Angels brings the reader to World War I; and A Matter of Time, the next-to-the-last volume discussed, has its surface plot in the present. My study shows West as being equally at home in the two regions....Jessamyn West is probably the first Quaker author working in the media of the novel *and* the short story to gain an international reputation as well as the approval of serious readers.--Alfred S.
