Description:On a cold October day in 1951, Clara is laid to rest in absolute silence. Her husband Carl has asked the assistant pastor not to talk about the deceased. Most families have secrets, but the way we understand and treat mental illness has changed drastically over the past hundred years. From being hidden, hushed up, and primarily handled in the private spaces of the family, challenged minds and psychiatric diagnoses are now discussed much more openly, both publicly and privately. By combining widely different sources – fiction, patient records and interviews – with fragments of the author's own family history, Sickness and Shame sheds light on how the view of and lived experience of mental illness has changed with cultural and political developments in welfare state Denmark, and how family history, welfare history and psychiatry history have influenced each other in different periods. We can never fully understand the experiences of mental illness in the past. But the picture that the sources in this book together create shifts the perspective on mental illness from being a primarily individual problem to a more collective, inter-social issue.
