Torn, however, between her deep affection for her employer, successful publisher Clay Everston, and her attraction to war hero, rising political star, and accomplished ladies' man, Pete Mannion, Constance discovers that the path to the life she longs for is a difficult one, even as she meets such figures as Hemingway and Faulkner along the way. It is especially so when both Clay and Pete declare their love for her and each becomes increasingly caught up in the dangerous political currents of post-war America. Things are no less difficult back in the early 1920s for Constance's fictional creation, Jamie. A beautiful member of old New York upper-class society, the idealistic Jamie teaches in a public elementary school in the Bronx. There she meets combat veteran, highly-ranked boxer, and aspiring writer Mike Costigan, uncle of one of her students and a product of the Bronx streets himself. Her growing feelings for Mike complicate her life, as she is engaged to Gilbert Hensleigh, a handsome young advertising executive and charming member of her own social class. As Constance develops Jamie's story, her own conflicts and longings are reflected in Jamie's, with scenes played out against a backdrop of 1920s New York and involving such well-known figures as Scott Fitzgerald himself and his wife Zelda, the elderly Edith Wharton, the youthful talents Hemingway, Louis Armstrong, and Edna St. Vincent Millay and the menacing gangsters Arnold Rothstein and Owney Madden.
