I don't know. I mean he's got this other novel, can't remember the title offhand, that is like one of those oral histories. You know, where a bunch of characters are all talking about a central subject. Yeah. This one is kind of like that except in that you got all sides of a conversation. Here, you've got this series of dramatic monologues starting in 1982 amongst three characters. Then, like ten years later only one of them is still around talking and the others are only referred to when he's having a conversation with his wife. And then ten years after that, suddenly you've got these two high school girls talking to each other.And that's when things start getting really complicated. Well, after the main guy confesses to something that happened between him and this twelve-year-old girl back in '82. And because all that went on back then, well, the stuff going on between the two high school girls, well, let's just say it's all connected and complicated and everything.I don't know what you'd say the story is. I mean there isn't really a plot. There is a storyline. A narrative. But it's more like this thing that is concerned with theme. Like, I don't know, he's offering up commentary or analysis on the theme of instigation. It's like a whole bunch of consequences happen based on the past and the question becomes at what exact point the instigation of events leading to those consequences began.More important, maybe, is deciding exactly who was the instigator. Like that twelve-year-old girl. It gets a little prickly because you have to start to wonder if it was her who actually instigated how this guys' life spiraled out of control. But, like she was twelve and he was nineteen, so shouldn't he the clear instigator? And what about the high school girls? It seems like one of them may have instigated something. But, I don't know, it's like maybe not as clear as it seems? Oh! And then there is this stuff about his wife. Is she having an affair? Is she just trying to get him to think she's having an affair. And, kind of like the girls, it's really kind of hard to figure out who was the instigator of all that. I mean you might even argue that it was the husband who is kind of making her do whatever she is doing. I'm not sure, really.That's what the plot, if you will, really seems to be all about. How far back do you have to go to say, yes, this point right here, this moment here was the instigation and this person was the instigator. But at the same time, well, you are only getting half the story with these one-sided conversational dramatic monologues. So, like, it's also about perception.Plus, frankly, I do wonder if he's just trying to purposely tick people off and stir up controversy with the whole relationship between the twelve-year-old girl and her nineteen-year-old crush.Gotta be honest. Some of those scenes made me really uncomfortable. Heck, even the cover is sort of disturbing for some reason. But I think I get the point. Maybe controversial, but I don't think that's the point. I don't know. Maybe it is. You should really read and decide for yourself who was the instigator of this whole story.
