Blood, Sweat & Tears (November 1972) Billy’s midnight escape from the prison hospital ward sets him on a course of revenge. He finds the gang’s Indiana woodlands hideout. He’s shocked to see many blackened corpses in the charred remains of a semi-trailer truck, embers still aglow. Armed and outraged, Billy bursts in on Dux and Celia, a Latina accomplice. They attack, plunging a hypodermic needle into Billy. Woozy from the injection, he’s beaten until he blacks-out. Miles away, Wes Harrison and his wife, Carolyn, make love. He’s trying to sort out a flagging career and a failing marriage. The phone rings incessantly. Wes answers. It’s his partner, Agent Jim Dobbs. The men are investigators with the Interagency Tactical Force (ITF). Jim says Billy Straw escaped prison and is holed-up in a farmhouse. Wes dresses, arms himself and hurriedly leaves home and Carolyn, angry and frustrated. Billy awakes in the farmhouse, badly bruised, slashed but mobile. He finds a mortally wounded Miguel Cortes, a Mexican farm labor contractor. Dux and Celia double-crossed Miguel, shot him, stole the payroll and burned the migrants in the truck. Miguel hands Billy a bloody crucifix and photo of a young Latina holding a baby. In his dying breath, he asks Billy to take the crucifix to his family. Billy realizes he’ll be blamed for the mass killings, and this time, he’ll get the death penalty. Billy bolts for his stolen car to escape. On recon, Wes and Jim cautiously drive the winding lane toward the farmhouse. They are surprised to see Billy Straw driving out. The agents fire at Billy. Bullets puncture Billy’s windshield but he manages to maneuver his car and escape. A fugitive, he’s got no family or friends to help him. Billy breaks into his boyhood church. He exchanges the prison uniform for clean clothes and then steals the collection. He muses that he’s got only a nickel’s worth of soul left. Pre-dawn at the farmhouse crime scene finds Jim Dobbs being driven to hospital for treatment of injuries received in the encounter with Billy Straw.
