Description:Stephen Hickman, 1970. Original illustration, by some accounts prior to the start of his professional career. Image area 11" x 8 3/4". Black matted at 14 3/4" x 12 1/4". Pen and ink on illustration board; Fine condition. Annotations on the back, including the remark "inside front", have the look of a layout editor's comments, indicating possible publication somewhere, though his for-pay career as an artist, by conventional record, started in 1972 when he began to illustrate for T-shirts in Maryland - and then went on to become one of the great sci-fi and fantasy artists of the past three decades. Provenance contact provided to purchaser. This is a picture of a Musketeer in mid-combat, thrusting his sword outward at the viewer (see scan), as might have been done for a men's adventure magazine.
