Description:At the time of his death Dallas resident George de Mohrenschildt (1911-1977), described by some as the "best friend" of accused presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, had completed a crude first draft of his memoirs. Unfinished, the text was appended to a government report published in 1979 and then largely forgotten by the broader public. Presented here in stand-alone book form for the first time is the original manuscript, its profusion of grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors corrected, its largely haphazard content professionally edited and organized, its arguments rigorously fact-checked and supplemented with several hundred annotations, often using documents declassified since de Mohrenschildt's death.The primary focus of de Mohrenschildt's text is a series of recollections about the man Lee Harvey Oswald himself. The majority of the material is an attempt to "humanize" our view of Oswald through a retelling of the brief time that de Mohrenschildt and his wife Jeanne befriended him and his wife Marina. Leaving aside the question of the accuracy of every last detail, it is a compelling alternative portrait. A secondary focus consists of several meditations on the corrosive effects knowing the Oswalds had on the professional and personal lives of the de Mohrenschildts, both immediately after Kennedy's assassination and then echoing across the years. Only in a tertiary sense-and even then only in an embryonic, rudimentary form in the book's final chapter-is the manuscript in any way concerned with Oswald's guilt or innocence and who the "real criminals" might be. There are no easy answers, and the reader is challenged to make up their own mind.
