His father was missionary physician Luther Halsey Gulick Sr. (1828-1891) and his mother was Louisa Lewis. His paternal grandfather Peter Johnson Gulick (1796-1877) was an even earlier missionary. He married Charlotte "Lottie" Emily Vetter of Hanover, New Hampshire in 1887.
