Description:A pool-side idler about how ""feudal princess"" Teddy MacLeod--last in a line of old-California aristocrats--finds disappointment in love, along with a new understanding of responsibility to her vast, fought-over ancestral land. Orphan of an alcoholic mother and uncaring father, virtually deserted by adored brother Peter (who just walked away one day), Teddy has already been through one unhappy marriage--with Easterner Charles, whose mournful dependence became stifling. And now she's 32 and apparently happily married to huge, handsome South African Pietr Voorhees. But just when Teddy comes around to accepting Voorhees' compulsive infidelities (she knows he truly loves her in his own big-hearted way), he disappears for good, crushed by secret financial disasters. Poor Teddy. There is, however, the family land to think about: she's been learning more and more about the MacLeod holdings (her parents had kept her in ignorance), and--with the help of a deceptively avuncular Irish Wall St. lawyer--Teddy outmaneuvers the scoundrelly head of the MacLeod empire (who might possibly have murdered her honest godfather). Moreover, Teddy gradually begins to understand the anti-MacLeod position--spearheaded by cartoonist Michael Ramsey and reporter Howard Diaz, who decry the expensive pure-white and wealthy developments sprouting on MacLeod land. And finally Teddy comes out all right in all departments, setting the social score right with a grand gesture and jetting off to Italy to a new lover, a friend of long-lost Peter. (Another love match, that of English reporter Nicola and Michael, is untidily thrown in too.)
